Porta Sant'Alessandro bears the name of one of the two patrons of Bergamo (the other is San Vincenzo) because the historic basilica dedicated to Sant'Alessandro had to be demolished to build the stretch of walls next to the door. Gargantuan in its shape and appearance, this gate connects upper Bergamo with its highest hill, that of San Vigilio.

The Porta Sant'Alessandro, one of the four gates of the Venetian Walls of Bergamo (to be exact the one facing west, towards Lecco and Como), is a little known and admired little jewel. Named in this way because of the nearby Basilica of Sant'Alessandro, which was destroyed to build the imposing Venetian defenses that surround the upper part of the Lombard capital, it hides an upper floor consisting of a large room with a very suggestive trussed roof.
