★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Se fossimo passati qui prima del 1561, Porta Pia non sarebbe ancora stata costituita e l'unico accesso per entrare od uscire da Roma in questo tratto delle mura Aureliane sarebbe Porta Nomentana. Questo tratto della vecchia via Nomentana si sarebbe congiunto a quello attuale all'altezza di villa Torlonia, terminando a Nomentum, l'attuale Mentana. I resti che possiamo osservare, resi ancora più modesti dall'inalzamento del piano stradale, ci fanno capire che la porta non era un ingresso monumentale come Porta Maggiore, porta San Sebastiano o porta Asinara. Le ridotte dimensioni di questo accesso sono dovute a porta Salaria, che si trovava a poche centinaia di metri andando verso Corso Italia. La cosa che mi ha colpito è che fino al 1565, anno in cui Pio IV la chiuderà definitivamente, a favore di Porta Pia, di questo accesso se ne poteva acquistare l'uso, per un periodo di sei mesi (per sextaria) o per un anno previa asta. il proprietario "temporaneo" guadagnava dal pagamento dei dazi sulle merci che entravano a Roma.
If we had passed here before 1561, Porta Pia would not have been established yet and the only access to enter or leave Rome in this stretch of the Aurelian walls would be Porta Nomentana. This stretch of the old Via Nomentana would be joined to the current one at Villa Torlonia, ending at Nomentum, the current Mentana.
