 The square originally Piazza PECULIO, takes its name from the Peculio Frumentario which served as a storehouse for foodstuffs and was intended to maintain the balance of prices and to allow the inhabitants of the area according to their need to receive a modest price of wheat and commodities especially in times of famine.
