Lo scultore realizzò la statua a partire dal 1540, in onore dell'unico condottieri di rilievo in tutta la storia della famiglia Medici. Inizialmente la statua sarebbe dovuta essere collocata dentro la Cappella Negroni all'interno della basilica.
 The monument to Giovanni delle Bande Nere, the work of Baccio Bandinelli, is moved from the steps of the basilica of San Lorenzo.
The sculptor made the statue starting from 1540, in honor of the only major leader in the entire history of the Medici family. Initially the statue should have been placed inside the Negroni Chapel inside the basilica.
