★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Gli scavi per le fondamenta ebbero inizi nel 1615 grazie alla volontà del principe don Francesco Branciforte e di sua moglie donna Giovanna d'Austria che stabilirono una rendita di 1500 scudi d' oro.
La prima pietra fu posta il 6 Ottobre 1616 su progetto del monaco cassinese Valeriano de Franchis. I lavori finirono nel 1646 con una spesa che superò gli 80.000 scudi.
Il monumentale prospetto è di linea barocca , per i suoi intagli di travertino bianco locale fu utilizzata la "Pietra di S. Barbara".
Per la sua imponenza e vastità il complesso monumentale è secondo in Sicilia soltanto a quello di S. Pietro l' Arena di Catania e a quello di Monreale.
L' ex Monastero è stato Municipio cittadino e Biblioteca comunale, dopo il restauro é oggi sede di mostre di vario genere ed ha scopo di rappresentanza, in attesa di ulteriori ampliamenti ed utilizzi.
Fa parte del grande complesso benedettino la Chiesa di S. Benedetto Abate.
 The excavations for the foundations began in 1615 thanks to the will of Prince Don Francesco Branciforte and his wife Giovanna d'Austria who established an income of 1500 gold scudi.
The first stone was laid on 6 October 1616 on a project by the Cassinese monk Valeriano de Franchis. The works ended in 1646 with an expense that exceeded 80,000 scudi.
The monumental façade is of Baroque style, the "Pietra di S. Barbara" was used for its local white travertine carvings.
For its grandeur and vastness, the monumental complex is second in Sicily only to that of S. Pietro l 'Arena in Catania and that of Monreale.
The former monastery was a city town hall and municipal library, after the restoration it is now the seat of various kinds of exhibitions and has the purpose of representation, pending further extensions and uses.
The Church of S. Benedetto Abate is part of the large Benedictine complex.
