o	olga lanza on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ La Chiesa di San Benedetto Abate fa parte di un un'imponente costruzione monastica seicentesca: il Monastero dei Benedettini, fatto costruire da Don Francesco Branciforte e da sua moglie Donna Giovanna d' Austria nei primi anni del XVII secolo (1614), è secondo, in Sicilia, soltanto a quello di S. Nicolò l' Arena di Catania. Il prospetto è costruito in Pietra di Santa Barbara ed ha linee Barocche. La Chiesa è a navata unica e custodisce alcune opere di pregevole fattura: un coro ligneo finemente intagliato raffigurante scene della vita di San Benedetto con i Santi Mauro e Placido, i Misteri Dolorosi e Gaudiosi e i quattro Evangelisti; la statua in legno policromo della Madonna del Rosario o della Vittoria, della scuola del Gagini, donata da Donna Giovanna d' Austria in segno di ringraziamento per la vittoria riportata dal padre Don Giovanni d' Austria nella battaglia di Lepanto (1571) contro i Turchi; il busto argenteo di San Benedetto (1710) e tante altre preziose tele ed opere di vario genere. La festa liturgica di San Benedetto Abate è l' 11 Luglio. The Church of San Benedetto Abate is part of an imposing seventeenth-century monastic building: the Benedictine Monastery, built by Don Francesco Branciforte and his wife Donna Giovanna of Austria in the early 17th century (1614), is the second, in Sicily, only to that of S. Nicolò the Arena of Catania. The elevation is built in Pietra di Santa Barbara and has Baroque lines. The Church has a single nave and houses some valuable works of art: a finely carved wooden choir depicting scenes from the life of Saint Benedict with Saints Mauro and Placido, the Sorrowful and Gaudiosi Mysteries and the four Evangelists; the polychrome wooden statue of the Madonna del Rosario or della Vittoria, of the school of Gagini, donated by Donna Giovanna of Austria as a sign of thanks for the victory given by her father Don Giovanni of Austria in the battle of Lepanto (1571) against the Turks ; the silver bust of San Benedetto (1710) and many other precious paintings and works of various kinds. The liturgical feast of St. Benedict the Abbot is July 11th.
