Durante i giorni di festività del santo protettore del paese, San Michele Arcangelo, le donne del paese si, anziane o non, si riuniscono per vegliare la statua, portata nella grotta per l'occasione, con canti tratti dalla tradizione e preghiere. Molto suggestiva. Very beautiful and characteristic, small. I Longobardi riservarono una particolare venerazione all'arcangelo Michele, al quale attribuirono le virtù guerriere un tempo adorate nel dio germanico Odino. All'arcangelo i Longobardi dedicarono diversi edifici religiosi in tutta Italia; in particolare, nel territorio del ducato di Benevento sorgeva il santuario di San Michele Arcangelo, fondato prima dell'arrivo dei Longobardi ma da questi adottato come santuario nazionale a partire dalla loro conquista del Gargano (VII secolo). La Grotta di San Michele di Orsara di Puglia, frequentata dal II secolo dopo Cristo, fa parte dell'ex complesso abbaziale dell'Angelo. Lungo una diramazione dell’antica Via Francigena, l’Abbazia dell’Angelo, nucleo originario della piccola Orsara, custodisce l’antica Grotta di San Michele, cuore dell’intero complesso abbaziale. Risalente al 1100, la Grotta di San Michele, è la prima costruzione storica di Orsara di Puglia. Ricavata da un anfratto naturale, è una replica della grotta di Monte Sant’Angelo e si raggiunge attraverso una scalinata sacra, all’interno dell’abbazia, con gradoni di pietra scavati probabilmente nel 200 dopo Cristo. A navata unica, la grotta ha una volta a botte, in roccia naturale, inglobata nel Seicento dalla sovrastante Chiesa del Pellegrino. All’interno, si ritrovano le iscrizioni e i graffiti lasciati dai pellegrini diretti al Santuario di San Michele e l’altare seicentesco. Ben curato quello sul frontone in edicola esterna e che necessita di un veloce restauro . Luogo da vedere. Evocative place, interesting the cave dedicated to the cult of the saint, well made mosaics inside the church before the descent to the cave. The one on the pediment in the external newsstand is well cared for and needs a quick restoration. Place to see.

During the days of the city patron this cave is used to pray in a wonderful ceremony. I highly recommend to visit this church and many others around Orsara. Visit around late afternoon / evening to ensure it's open or ask the wonderful people of Orsara, they will be more than happy to help you.
