Potrebbe essere uno dei punti di forza del turismo a Messina a pochi passi dal centro città... peccato non venga considerato come dovrebbe dalle istituzioni! One of the forts of Messina ... recently visited and is a show thanks to the work done by the association of the fort. C'è al momento relativamente poco da vedere, ma tantissimo da scoprire. Sicuramente da visitare e rivalutare. Dovrebbero metter a pagamento l'ingresso e reinvestire quei soldi per ripristinare il resto della struttura, perché merita. V	Vincenzo Marabello on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Il luogo è raggiungibile percorrendo la circonvallazione in direzione Montepiselli , sicuramente molto consigliabile raggiungerlo con un mezzo . Il castello e non Forte come molti dicono è una struttura che è stata commissionata da Re Carlo V in persona , ha avuto la funzione di difendere accesso a Sud e a Nord di Messina , contro le scorribande dei pirati saraceni , la peculiaritá del castello (e che lo distingueva dagli ultimi castelli medioevali) è che l'entrata è situata lateralmente rispetto alla facciata principale del castello di conseguenza chi provava ad assediare era sicuramente in difficoltà nel farlo . Venne utilizzato per circa 400 anni sempre con la stessa funzione (in un breve periodo del 900 come deposito di munizioni) ed è percorso da tunnel sotterranei che fungevano da scappatoie o da trasporti veloci per i munizionamenti dei cannoni . Questo castello insieme al Castello San Salvatore aveva il compito di "vegliare" sulla città e di avvertire la cittadinanza in caso di invasione. Adesso il castello è davvero decadente a causa della non curanza delle amministrazioni e dei vandali , un plauso va alle associazioni di volontari e privati che cercano di recuperare quel che resta di un pezzo della nostra storia che ci fa capire come la difesa di Messina fosse davvero importante.. Il luogo è reso fruibile grazie all'impegno e alla dedizione dei volontari dell'associazione Gonzaga. Spero che l'amministrazione investa per valorizzare questo bene artistico e culturale affinché possa diventare meta obbligata per i turisti. Spesso castelli simili sono lasciati al passaggio libero dei visitatori, senza alcun supporto. Qui siamo stati accompagnati nel tour delle parti agibili e abbiamo avuto spiegazioni tanto dettagliate quanto sofferte e appassionate. Lo sforzo dell'associazione permette all'utente di visitare un monumento che può definirsi unico nel suo genere. Forte Gonzaga was built on the hill of Montepiselli, outside the city walls. It was able to defend the mountainous landward approach to the city, and it also overlooked the Strait of Messina. The fort was designed by Antonio Ferramolino, a military engineer from Bergamo. He was assisted by Francesco Maurolico, a native of Messina. It was named after the Viceroy of Sicily Don Ferrante Gonzaga, and was completed in 1545. The Ottoman threat was reduced after the Catholic victory in the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, and the fort's importance began to decline. It saw use during the 1674–78 uprising against Spanish rule. Spain eventually lost Sicily in 1713, but invaded the island five years later during the War of the Quadruple Alliance. During the invasion, the fort did not offer much resistance and was captured by the Spanish general Luca Spinola. During the Sicilian revolution of 1848, the fort was captured by rebels, who used it to bombard the Real Cittadella which was still in Bourbon hands. Forte Gonzaga saw use in World War II, and it remained a military establishment until 1973, when the Italian Army handed it to the municipality of Messina. There are plans to restore the fort and turn it into a museum and conference centre.
