Venne costruita utilizzando la parte frontale della vecchia chiesa di San Donato della quale si vedono chiaramente gli archi delle campate. Coperta per diverso tempo è stata restituita alla città nel suo splendore. Nel 1433 venne costruita una prima fontana ma quella odierna è risalente al 1746. Il getto della fontana cambia nel tempo ma sinceramente non sono riuscito a capirne se c'è una motivazione o semplicemente è un problema di portata. Beautiful fountain located in the northern area of Piazza del Mercato. It was built using the front part of the old church of San Donato of which the arches of the spans can be clearly seen. Covered for some time, it was returned to the city in its splendor. In 1433 a first fountain was built but the present one dates back to 1746. The jet of the fountain changes over time but honestly I have not been able to understand if there is a reason or simply a problem of scope.

Il costo dei lavori fu di seicento fiorini; l'inaugurazione avvenne in occasione della visita in città dell'imperatore Sigismondo di Boemia. Altre notizie sono riportate da Achille Sansi nella sua opera Storia del Comune di Spoleto dal secolo XII al XVII. Lo storico ci informa che: nel 1512 la fontana venne "ravvivata di maggior copia d'acqua" grazie a migliorie effettuate nelle condutture. nel 1580 un imprendibile giovane bandito che era solito assalire e depredare cittadini e abitazioni, tal Petrino Leoncilli, espose sulla fontana, con intenti intimidatori e di sfida, le teste che aveva mozzato a tutti i suoi avversari con sfrenata atrocità, insieme ad una masnada di fedelissimi complici. Lo spazio di fronte alla fontana era occupato da una chiesa romanica chiamata chiesa di San Donato, di cui oggi restano soltanto gli archi delle campate lungo via dei Duchi, occupate da negozi di aspetto medievale, ma effettivamente ricavati nella seconda metà del Cinquecento, quando la chiesa cadde in rovina e venne abbandonata.
