★ ★ ★ ★ ★ È una delle opere più apprezzate di Villa d’Este, una delle tante fontane, 100 in tutto, che fanno da cornice al meraviglioso giardino della villa e al viale che conduce al palazzo. La fontana del Bicchierone fu realizzata da Gian Lorenzo Bernini su commissione del cardinale Rinaldo d’Este tra il 1660 e il 1661. La fontana è composta da un alto calice collocato dentro una conchiglia; si parla quindi di un’immagine già vista a Roma nella fontana del Tritone di piazza Barberini, opera anche questa a firma del Bernini.
La fontana del Bicchierone fu inaugurata nel maggio del 1661 in onore di alcuni ospiti ed è possibile ammirarla anche dal terrazzo inferiore cui si accede dal viale dei Melograni.
It is one of the most popular works of Villa d’Este, one of the many fountains, 100 in all, which frame the wonderful garden of the villa and the avenue leading to the palace. The Bicchierone fountain was built by Gian Lorenzo Bernini on commission from Cardinal Rinaldo d’Este between 1660 and 1661. The fountain is made up of a tall chalice placed inside a shell; we are therefore talking about an image already seen in Rome in the Triton Fountain in Piazza Barberini, also a work by Bernini.
The Bicchierone fountain was inaugurated in May 1661 in honor of some guests and it is also possible to admire it from the lower terrace which is accessed from Viale dei Melograni.
