La festa patronale a lei dedicata si festeggia il 2 luglio di ogni anno da più di 600 anni, quando papa Urbano VI, già arcivescovo di Matera, istituì nel 1389 la festa della Visitazione; da quella data in poi i festeggiamenti in onore della Madonna, già esistenti nella città di Matera da qualche secolo, furono effettuati in coincidenza con il giorno della festa della Visitazione[1]. Oggi la Visitazione viene celebrata il 31 maggio, nel rito romano rinnovato sotto Paolo VI, mentre il 2 luglio si celebra la Visitazione nella forma straordinaria; a Matera con la festa della Madonna della Bruna, ad Enna con la Madonna della Visitazione ed a Siena con il Palio di Siena.
Storia e leggende legate alla venerazioneModifica
Non chiare sono le origini della festa la cui storia, tramandata di generazione in generazione, si è arricchita col tempo di innumerevoli varianti. Una di queste leggende racconta che una giovane e sconosciuta signora chiese ad un contadino di farla salire sul suo carretto per accompagnarla a Matera. Giunta alla periferia della città, nella zona dell'attuale chiesa dell'Annunziata del rione Piccianello, scese dal carretto e chiese al contadino di portare un suo messaggio al Vescovo, in cui diceva di essere la madre di Cristo. Il Vescovo insieme al clero ed al popolo accorse subito ad accogliere la Vergine, e vi trovarono una statua; così la statua della Madonna fu fatta entrare in città su un carro trionfale addobbato[2].
 The Madonna della Bruna is the protector of the city of Matera. The patronal feast dedicated to her has been celebrated on July 2nd of each year for more than 600 years, when Pope Urban VI, former archbishop of Matera, established the feast of the Visitation in 1389; from that date onwards the celebrations in honor of the Madonna, already existing in the city of Matera for a few centuries, were carried out to coincide with the day of the feast of the Visitation [1]. History and legends related to veneration
The origins of the festival are unclear, whose history, handed down from generation to generation, has been enriched over time with countless variations. One of these legends tells that a young and unknown lady asked a farmer to pick her up on her cart to accompany her to Matera. Arriving on the outskirts of the city, in the area of the present church of the Annunziata of the Piccianello district, she got out of the cart and asked the farmer to bring a message to the Bishop, where he said he was the mother of Christ. The Bishop together with the clergy and the people immediately rushed to welcome the Virgin, and they found a statue; thus the statue of the Madonna was brought into the city on a decorated triumphal chariot [2].
