La chiesa che originariamente era romanica, come tante che ancora si ammirano in Puglia, fu completamente ricostruita nel 1529, era anche una "Chiesa Palatina" come si può ancora notare dallo stemma sabaudo dipinto sull'arco trionfale sul fondo della navata centrale. Se aperta è da visitare la cripta rivestita di preziosi marmi, vi si conserva l'icona della "Madonna di Costantinopoli" protettrice della città. Attualmente è in restauro l'interno, ma è possibile accedere alla cripta che nasconde un altare tutto in argento...si narra ad Acquaviva che dalla CRIPTA, in religioso silenzio, si può percepire lo scorrere di un fiume carsico sotterraneo I will be biased, but we are faced with an excellent example of Romanesque that combines the simplicity of the facade with the particularity of its ROSETTE. L'architettura attuale è il risultato di una riorganizzazione strutturale che amplificandola, ne ha mutato il prospetto. L'antica chiesa (1158), con la facciata e il campanile nella piazzetta laterale, è un esempio di Romanico pugliese, mentre il nuovo accorpamento, con la facciata d'ingresso in piazza dei Martiri, è in stile rinascimentale (1594). Molto bello l'effetto d'insieme. Da segnalare la ricchezza dell'interno a tre navate e la preziosità della Cripta, in cui è custodita l'icona della Madonna di Costantinopoli. La chiesa è una delle mete turistiche del percorso: Cattedrali pugliesi. The Cathedral is the "jewel" of the city. The current architecture is the result of a structural reorganization which, by amplifying it, has changed its elevation. The ancient church (1158), with the facade and the bell tower in the side square, is an example of Apulian Romanesque, while the new amalgamation, with the entrance facade in Piazza dei Martiri, is in Renaissance style (1594). The overall effect is very nice. Worth noting is the richness of the interior with three naves and the preciousness of the Crypt, which houses the icon of the Madonna of Constantinople. The church is one of the tourist destinations of the route: Apulian cathedrals.
