Es una iglesia muy sencilla, pero como todo en Italia, custodia algún que otro tesoro: su pila bautismal, las reliquias de Santo Tomás Becket, y unos frescos un tanto deteriorados pero muy bonitos. Se cree que ya en el S.X existía, pero fue destruida en 1102 y reconstruida en 1198. En el 1507 experimentó una renovación como lo indica la inscripción del arquitrabe de la puerta. Entre 1880 y 1901 hay noticias de trabajos de restauración en el campanario, que en 1890 se convirtió en monumento nacional. Es una torre cuadrada de cuatro pisos, con ventanas geminadas a cada lado. La iglesia es de estilo románico. Dos bonitos leones en piedra blanca (un tanto desfigurados por el paso del tiempo), sostienen las dos columnas ubicadas a los lados de la puerta principal. Tiene una nave central y dos pasillos laterales accesibles a través de grandes arcos redondos muy bonitos. En 2015 comenzó la restauración y consolidación estructural del edificio, cuando salieron a la luz un antiguo rosetón y un fresco de un artista desconocido que representa a la Virgen del Rosario. Éste es muy bonito. Aparece la Virgen con el Niño y dos santos junto a ellos; y los misterios del Rosario en círculos, alrededor de la imagen principal. El presbiterio también se rehizo, donde se encontraron tumbas de los asientos, se colocaron los cánones y los obispos. El nuevo altar fue consagrado el 3 de diciembre de 2017 y se colocaron en su interior las reliquias de Santo Tomás Becket, (también descubiertas), el patrón de la ciudad. El interior tiene tres naves, con seis columnas. En la nave izquierda hay una fuente bautismal del S.XII de piedra, preciosa; y tres altares dedicados a la Virgen del Rosario, a la Virgen de Ostra Brama, venerada por los polacos que la dejaron en 1945 (con una serie de reliquias envueltas en un pergamino con fecha de 1884), y otro dedicado al Niño Jesús, que tiene dos nichos: en uno está la Virgen de Lourdes y en el otro la Virgen de la Divina Gracia. A lo largo de la nave izquierda hay otros cuatro altares: Santo Tomás de Canterbury, San José, el Sagrado Corazón de Jesús y San Antonio. El altar está coronado por un lienzo que representa a la Virgen y el Niño entre San Vito Martir y San Francescisco de Paula. Al final de la nave se encuentra la capilla del Santísimo Sacramento, con una pintura de la Última Cena, del napolitano Gennaro Maldarelli. En el ábside hay una pintura que representa la Asunción con Santo Tomás, realizada en 1706 por Nicola Malinconico. También hay tres pinturas, pintadas al fresco en piedra, que representan a San Tomás Becket, San Pablo y Santa Lucía. Aquí es posible observar las tumbas de los asientos y un antiguo tabernáculo que data de 1489, excavado dentro de la pared, donde se encuentran actualmente los Aceites Sagrados.
It is a very simple church, but like everything in Italy, it guards the odd treasure: its baptismal font, the relics of Saint Thomas Becket, and some somewhat deteriorated but very beautiful frescoes. It is believed that it already existed in the 10th century, but it was destroyed in 1102 and rebuilt in 1198. In 1507 it underwent a renovation as indicated by the architrave inscription on the door. Between 1880 and 1901 there is news of restoration work on the bell tower, which in 1890 became a national monument. It is a four-story square tower, with mullioned windows on each side. The church is Romanesque in style. Two beautiful white stone lions (somewhat disfigured by the passage of time), support the two columns located on the sides of the main door. It has a central nave and two lateral corridors accessible through large beautiful round arches. In 2015 the restoration and structural consolidation of the building began, when an old rose window and a fresco by an unknown artist representing the Virgin of the Rosary came to light. This one is very pretty. The Virgin with the Child and two saints appear next to them; and the mysteries of the Rosary in circles, around the main image. The presbytery was also rebuilt, where seat tombs were found, canons and bishops were placed. The new altar was consecrated on December 3, 2017 and the relics of Saint Thomas Becket, (also discovered), the patron saint of the city, were placed inside it. The interior has three naves, with six columns. In the left nave there is a precious 12th century baptismal font; and three altars dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary, to the Virgin of Ostra Brama, venerated by the Poles who left her in 1945 (with a series of relics wrapped in a scroll dated 1884), and another dedicated to the Child Jesus, which It has two niches: in one there is the Virgin of Lourdes and in the other the Virgin of Divine Grace. Along the left nave there are four other altars: Saint Thomas of Canterbury, Saint Joseph, the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Saint Anthony. The altar is crowned by a canvas that represents the Virgin and Child between San Vito Martir and San Francescisco de Paula. At the end of the nave is the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, with a painting of the Last Supper, by the Neapolitan Gennaro Maldarelli. In the apse there is a painting representing the Assumption with Saint Thomas, made in 1706 by Nicola Malinconico. There are also three paintings, frescoed in stone, depicting Saint Thomas Becket, Saint Paul, and Saint Lucia. Here it is possible to observe the tombs of the seats and an ancient tabernacle dating from 1489, excavated inside the wall, where the Sacred Oils are currently located.

Se siete sulla collina di Mottola non potere esimervi dal visitare l'Ex Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta. Si trova in centro ed è stata ristrutturata nell'anno 2017, ripristinando in parte lo stile originale. Consiglio la visita a tutti, merita davvero.
If you are on the hill of Mottola you cannot fail to visit the former Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. It is located in the center and was renovated in 2017, partially restoring the original style. I recommend the visit to everyone, it really deserves.
