Palazzo Diomede Carafa is a monumental palace in Naples built in the fifteenth century along the lower decuman. Historical background The palace was founded in the fifteenth century by Diomede Carafa first count of Maddaloni with the aim of hosting the finds of antiquity found in the city, substantially rebuilding a pre-existing medieval building probably still belonging to the Carafa family. [1] The reconstruction was then completed in 1466 and is also testified by a Latin epigraph on the courtyard of honor: «HAS COMES INSIGNIS DIOMEDES CONDIDIT AEDES & CARAFA IN LAUDEM REGIS PATRIAEQUE DECOREM & EST ET FORTE LOCUS MAGIS APTUS ET AMPLIUS IN URBE% SIT SED AB AGNATIS DISCED TURPE PUTAVIT » (The distinguished Count Diomedes Carafa built this house. It is to the praise of the king and the dignity of the homeland. There may also be a larger and more suitable site in the city, but he considered it foul to separate from his ancestors.) According to Chiarini, who took up news of Bernardo De Dominici, the project of the pre-existing medieval palace belongs to Masuccio Primo, [1] while in the attribution of the project of the palace, however, other theories are advanced, among which it is assumed that the authorship of the the work is to be traced back to Angelo Aniello Fiore, sculptor and architect to whom we owe the design of the Petrucci palace, with which there are several architectural analogies, and who worked with the Carafa for a long time and who created a sepulcher for them for the family in the church of San Domenico Maggiore. The palace subsequently passed to the son of Diomedes and still later, since the counts of Maddaloni had no heirs, it became the property of the Carafa branch of Columbrano, who restored it, bringing it back to its old splendor after years of abandonment. After the death of the Duchess Faustina Pignatelli, wife of Francesco Carafa di Columbrano, the palace returned to oblivion again and in 1815 it was purchased by the Santangelo [1] who used it as a private museum.

Beautiful Renaissance building located on the lower decumanus, immediately recognizable by its bicolour ashlar exterior on which a huge wisteria climbs on one side, for the beautiful carved and recently restored wooden door, dominated by the statue of Hercules. In the large courtyard, between colonnades, arches and friezes, the horse head attributed to Donatello stands out, also restored, a copy of the original preserved in the MANN. Inside you can find different activities and craft shops
