A hidden jewel of Naples, recovered and made usable by very good guys. The small church had been forgotten for over 30 years, water infiltrations from above had ruined the frescoes, a parking space had been created in front of the entrance and all kinds of waste had been abandoned inside ...
Then in 2013 the recovery of the church began, which dates back to 1300: it was the place of worship for the corporation of the Pipernieri, the cutters of the volcanic stone of piperno, who were devoted to Saint Lucia, protector of the eyes and who protected them from risk of losing sight by chipping stone.
Going down to the basement of the church means immersing yourself in the most authentic Neapolitan folklore. Here are kept about 30 skulls of members of the brotherhood who died between 1600 and 1800, and which were placed on a cornice. Among these skulls is the famous skull with ears, which obviously are not ears but temples dilated to the point of looking like ears. In the basement there was the cult of the "capuzzelle" (skulls), which were cared for, guarded and adopted by the people, and to which the population addressed prayers that the skulls would hear, and acted as an intermediary from the world of the living to the world of the dead. When the capuzzella did not listen to the prayers of the devotees and the requests of the faithful did not come true, it was turned upside down and was no longer an object of devotion.
The entrance fee is only 5 euros.
We had Lisa as a guide, and she was very good, managing to involve our children as well. Congratulations to the Association and to the guys who have recovered and enhanced this extraordinary place.

β β β β β Only in Naples there exists such a strong link between life and death, cultivated by all with a practice that is difficult for me too, as a believer, to understand. Since the 17th century, people could adopt the skulls of those who had not been able to receive a decent burial, the so called "pezzentelle" souls (ancient Neapolitan cult of the souls of the dead). It was a gentle way of obtaining graces and benefits by accompanying so the poor souls to Paradise with prayers.
In the ancient hypogeum of the Church of Santa Luciella ai Librai in San Gregorio Armeno, a small architectural jewel that has finally been opened to the public, there is a curious skull with ears to which prayers, invocations and supplications can be addressed, even written on pieces of paper to be left in the special baskets, which is what I did, Amen??

β β β β β An incredibly beautiful, haunting and interesting church. The catacombs with skulls, trinkets and prayers offered to dead souls are small but breathtaking. The charms showing different body parts, and the famous image of a cup with eyes is stunning too. The tour guide was very sweet and connected with the work of restoring the church, and keen to explain all she could on our short tour.

β β β β β Wonderful tour guides! Spoke great English, very lovely people. Explained their reasons for their work and renovations. Itβs a small little place. Doesnβt take long 10-15 minutes. But they have a beautiful story to tell!
Found on way to the torture museum. Wasnβt going to go in. But Iβm very glad I did!
