Obecny Piazza della Cittadella pochodzi z 1379 roku, był to dziedziniec w którym mieściły się kwatery dla garnizonu wojskowego.
Położenie cytadeli było wysoce strategiczne - z cytadelą Rocca na przeciwległym krańcu miasta stanowiło kompleks obronny miasta. Struktura złożona z kilku budynków przeszła wiele zmian, stając się własnością w XX wieku własnością miasta, w której mieści się Muzeum Archeologiczne i Muzeum Nauk Przyrodniczych „Enrico Caffi”.

Edificata e fortificata dai Visconti durante la loro lunga e sanguinosa dominazione sulla città, originariamente era molto più ampia ed era adibita a caserma per le truppe dei Visconti.
Oggi si presenta purtroppo sempre piena di auto parcheggiate e i dipinti che ne affeescavano le pareti purtroppo non ci sono più, eppure aleggia ancora un'atmosfera molto particolare.
Consiglio di visitare il museo di Scienze Naturali presente negli edifici che compongono il quadrilatero della piazza.
