Beautiful church, both richly made facade on the outside and interesting interior. It is located on Campo San Rocco, next to the magnificent Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari and the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. The church is dedicated to Saint Roch (San Rocco). Saint Roch or San Rocco was a Catholic saint, a confessor whose death is commemorated on 16 August and 9 September in Italy, he is specially invoked against the plague. He may also be called Rock in English, and has the designation of St Rollox in Glasgow, Scotland, said to be a corruption of St Roch's Loch, which referred to a small loch once near a chapel dedicated to St. Roch in 1506. He is a patron saint of dogs, invalids, of falsely accused people, bachelors, and several other things. He is the patron saint of Dolo (near Venice) and Parma. The church was built between 1489 and 1508 by Bartolomeo Bon the Younger, but was substantially altered in 1725. The façade dates from 1765 to 1771, and was designed by Bernardino Maccarucci. The church is one of the Plague-churches built in Venice. The beautiful facade is decorated with statues by Giovanni Marchiori. On the left Gerard de CsanÑd (Gerardo Sagredo) and Gregorio Barbarigo, on the right, Lorenzo Giustiniani and Pietro Orseolo. In the center above the entrance door, San Rocco heals the victims of the plague by Giovanni Maria Morlaiter. The rich church interior is notable for its Tintoretto paintings including "Annunciation and St Roch presented to the Pope" on west wall, "St. Roch curing the plague victims", "St. Roch comforted by an Angel", "St. Roch in Solitude and St. Roch healing the Animals " in chancel. Very nice and interesting church, for art lovers.

Magnificent masterpiece of the Rainessance, amazing architecture and great works of Tintoretto, the church and the Scuola Grande are probably the best buildings of the XVI century in Venice.

Another good reason to venture into the interior of Venice! This outdoor concert took place around August 10th or so at about 9:00pm between three buildings (Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Church of Saint Roch, and Leonardo da Vinci Museum). If you look close, you will see the red awning connects all three structures. The seating I assume was reserved, but passersby were able to walk up at the back to listen and take photos & video for free. Well worth the effort!!! [The desk clerk at my hotel seemed to think this was an annual celebration.]
