Loved the place. Carry a water bottle, it's exhausting to walk around.

A beautiful church with a rich and interesting history. Chiesa di San Nicolò da Tolentino is located in the Santa Croce sestiere in Venice. It is located in the Camp of the same name and next to the Rio dei Tolentini, near the Giardino Papadopoli. Since he had it built by the church order of Theatines for the sake of curiosity it is necessary to say something about them. The Order of the Theatines (in Venice always called Tolentini) was founded in Rome in 1524 by Giovanni Pietro Carafa (later Pope Paul IV) together with Gaetano da Thiene, both of noble origins. Following the terrible struggle to which Rome was subjected in 1527 by the imperial of Charles V, led by the two founders, the Theatines left the city to seek refuge in Venice. Among the first fathers ordained in Venice by Gaetano da Thiene is the famous Giovanni Marinoni, from a Bergamo family but born in Venice and graduated in Padua. He embarked on the religious life becoming a piovan of the nearby church of San Pantalon. Meanwhile, over time, it was generally appreciated by the Government of the Republic of the rigorous apostolate carried out by the Teatini in the city (for the reason that it tended to bring the nobility and people closer culturally). So they set about building a new beautiful church. The building was designed and started by Vincenzo Scamozzi in 1591 and completed in 1602. Andrea Tirali (1706-1714) added to the unfinished façade of the pronaos with Corinthian columns which anticipates the new neoclassical style. The interior preserves a gallery of sixteent century and seventeenth century painting in Venice. The internal plan is a Latin cross with one nave, with three chapels on each side, alternating with Corinthian pilasters that rhythmically mark the space and make it visually uniform. Four Dossiers are buried here: Giovanni I Corner, Francesco Corner, Giovanni II Corner and Paolo Renier. The Patriarch Francesco Morosini was also buried there, whose monument was made by the Genoese sculptor Filippo Parodi. The church also houses a Baroque organ, built by Pietro Nachini in 1754 almost totally intact. The convent attached to the church is now the seat of the IUAV, the University Institute of Architecture.

I've always wondered how many churches could be found in Italy? With that being said, this location is a focal point for people far and near, and acts as a great people watching sight both day and night. It became a landmark of sorts, navigating from once side of the canals to the other. With a decent restaurant and a pub right out front, it is an enjoyable location to sit and watch the Italian world pass by. At night, it brings out an amazing image of Gothic lore.
