Gothic style church, at least the façade and the bell tower kept as they originally were while the interiors are the result of an eighteenth-century reconstruction. It is now deconsecrated, therefore no longer used for religious services since the middle of the last century but is used as an archive.

A very beautiful church, which is inconspicuously in the center, between beautiful alleys.

It is located in the sestiere of San Polo, near the Rialto Bridge. The church was founded in the 11th century, by refugees ( Sciavola and Rampana familes ) from Ravenna and dedicated to St Apollinare. The current church dates from a rebuilding of 1407. The Church of Sant’Aponal is built of brick in the Gothic style. Reliefs above the door, which may have come from a demolished altar in the original church, show The Crucifixion with the Virgin and St John the Evangelist under a Gothic arch and flanked by saints in spired niches. At the foot of the Romanesque campanile was once the oldest known relief of the Lion of St. Mark (the famous ‘crab lion’, now housed in the Correr Museum). During the Napoleonic occupation, it was deconsecrated and only reconsecrated in 1851. For a time it was used as a prison for political prisoners. It was re-closed in 1984, and is now mainly an archive. Numerous works of art by famous masters such as Giambattista Tiepolo, Luca Giordano ..... loprvo are taken to Paris, but then returned to Italy and are located in Milan and Venice.
