La chiesa di San Sebastiano del Monte dei Morti venne costruita nel 1530 a Salerno su progetto dell’architetto Antonio da Ogliara. Nel 994, in una proprietà del monastero di San Lorenzo posta presso il torrente Rafastia, allora detto Faustino, si rileva la presenza di una chiesa di San Sebastiano. Difficile stabilire quale rapporto vi fu fra il sito di essa, troppo vagamente descritto, e il sito di quella che compare sotto lo stesso titolo nel 1549, presso la porta Rotense, confinante con un giardino della famiglia Santomango. Certo è che sul sito di quest’ultima il nobile Orazio Longobardo, segretario della Regia Udienza di Principato Citra e Basilicata, familiare di sua maestà cattolica, edifica l’attuale. La chiesa, nel 1618, è citata con il titolo di San Sebastiano delli Morti, risulta “noviter edificata et dotata ex [sua] pietate et industria […] cum altare Crucifixi inferioris cripte pro missis defuntorum celebrandis”. Viene eretta canonicamente con bolla del 20 ottobre 1615, nella quale, con bolla del 18 luglio 1617 viene istituita la confraternita sub titulo sanitatis. The church of San Sebastiano del Monte dei Morti was built in 1530 in Salerno on a project by the architect Antonio da Ogliara. In 994, in a property of the monastery of San Lorenzo located near the Rafastia stream, then called Faustino, the presence of a church of San Sebastiano was noted. It is difficult to establish what relationship there was between its site, too vaguely described, and the site of the one that appears under the same title in 1549, near the Porta Rotense, bordering a garden of the Santomango family. What is certain is that on the site of the latter the noble Orazio Longobardo, secretary of the Royal Audience of Principality Citra and Basilicata, family member of his Catholic majesty, builds the current one. The church, in 1618, is mentioned with the title of San Sebastiano delli Morti, is “noviter built and gifted ex [his] pietate et industry […] with altar Crucifixi inferioris crypts pro missis defuntorum celebrandis”. It was canonically erected with a bull of 20 October 1615, in which, with a bull of 18 July 1617, the brotherhood sub titulo sanitatis was established.

È legata alla storia antica della città di Salerno, che vale la pena di approfondire, avvalendosi del contributo di una valente guida turistica. Sorge poco distante dal Museo Diocesano e consente, quindi, di abbinare le due visite culturali. Le atmosfere malinconiche, nonostante l'attuale degrado architettonico, ne fanno il simbolo di una cristianità misericordiosa, un rifugio spirituale dal dolore terreno e dalla sofferenza. È davvero un invito alla contemplazione e all'intimo raccoglimento interiore. The Church of the Monte dei Morti is marvelous inside, even if in a state of deplorable abandonment ... It is linked to the ancient history of the city of Salerno, which is worth investigating, making use of the contribution of a talented tour guide. It rises not far from the Diocesan Museum and therefore allows to combine the two cultural visits. The melancholic atmospheres, despite the current architectural degradation, make it the symbol of a merciful Christianity, a spiritual refuge from earthly pain and suffering. It is truly an invitation to contemplation and intimate inner recollection.
