★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Historically important cathedral, in spite of renovations. Wish they had information posted about it's significance and the consecration by Pope Gregory VII. The 13th century pulpits are massive and beautiful. The crypt is impressive, but I wish they had not covered up all the medieval past. At least the tower is still standing!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Probably the most important cathedral in Southern Italy (excluding Sicily)! Exterior is in pure Roman style, while interior is an odd mix of Baroque, Romanesque (Byzantine-like), Gothic (sculptures) and Moorish. Of highest interest are the mosaics in the recently restored altar, who alone place Salerno on the map of art lovers.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ An absolutely magical find. This is a true gem. The history and art here is beyond comprehension. You must visit here. Mind blowing. Old bodies , tombs and so much more. I've seen temples and churches all over the world but the bit down stairs off to the left of the main indoor part is the best part. Make sure you find those stairs and see that ceiling. The whole story of Christ. Old paintings of salerno in 1300 and the small cripts with bones

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A huge piece of history of Salerno, the only cathedral were is buried a Pope outside of the Vatican City. Quick visit but definitely worth the time.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Absolutely incredible experience, especially the crypt of St Mathew. In the main church a very unobtrusive stairway leads you to the crypt - don’t miss it! It’s amazing and I’ve seen all of the well noted churches and mosques but this is truly one of a kind.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The cathedral's atrium is really nice, however the inside is not very remarkable, despite the Moriah decorations.
What is remarkable though is that the cathedral apparently has St. Matthew's tomb.
