β β β β β La chiesa di San Benedetto fu costruita tra il 1817 e il 1819, su disegno di Gaspero Pampaloni, grazie al notevole lascito del commerciante Benedetto Fagiuoli. Nel 1860 fu innalzato il campanile e quindi fu ampliata la canonica, che inizialmente si sviluppava su un solo piano.
La chiesa Γ¨ in stile neoclassico, con una facciata molto dilatata caratterizzata da un portico di otto colonne d'ordine ionico e da un grande attico, quest'ultimo frutto di successive modifiche rispetto al progetto del Pampaloni. Interessante anche il disegno dei prospetti laterali, definiti da due esedre leggermente aggettanti, dotate di finestre semicircolari che rimandano all'architettura termale romana.
L'interno, a pianta centralizzata, Γ¨ una croce greca impostata attorno a quattro robusti pilastri che sostengono la calotta centrale a cassettoni. La chiesa fu arricchita da numerose opere di artisti livornesi dell'Ottocento, come Paolo Emilio Demi, che qui realizzΓ² quattro angeli a stucco nei pennacchi della volta centrale. Si ricordano inoltre il San Borromeo che comunica gli appestati, dipinto dal Gazzarrini e il San Rocco di Carlo Chelli.
The church of San Benedetto was built between 1817 and 1819, on a design by Gaspero Pampaloni, thanks to the notable legacy of the merchant Benedetto Fagiuoli. In 1860 the bell tower was raised and then the rectory was enlarged, which initially developed on one floor.
The church is in neoclassical style, with a very dilated facade characterized by a portico of eight Ionic columns and a large attic, the latter resulting from subsequent changes compared to the Pampaloni project. Also interesting is the design of the side elevations, defined by two slightly projecting exedras, equipped with semicircular windows that refer to Roman thermal architecture.
The interior, with a centralized plan, is a Greek cross set around four sturdy pillars that support the central coffered cap. The church was enriched with numerous works by nineteenth-century artists from Livorno, such as Paolo Emilio Demi, who made four stucco angels here in the pendentives of the central vault. We also remember the San Borromeo that communicates the plague victims, painted by Gazzarrini and the San Rocco by Carlo Chelli.
