Very beautiful church, impossible not to notice it if you dock at the port and go downtown.

The Cathedral of Ischia Porto, with the chapel of the Bourbons, overlooks the port, the portico is beautiful. Well organized for functions with hand sanitization and spacing. It is worth a visit.

The Church of Santa Maria di Portosalvo represents the first monument once landed on the island of Ischia. This beautiful church, the largest on the island, is located in the center of the port of Ischia, in front of the statue of Christ the Redeemer. The Church was inaugurated in 1856 (two years earlier there had been the laying of the first stone at the same time as the opening of the port) the church, as well as the port and the internal road connecting the municipalities of Forio, Lacco Ameno and Casamicciola Terme was part of a more general plan to enhance the territory financed by the Bourbon royal house. At the entrance to the Church there are important white columns that divide the building from the busy Via Iasolino, one of the main roads on the island as well as a limited traffic area (almost always inactive). Behind it, as if to protect it, is the Montagnone hill, the small promontory which, in some way, is the ideal testimony of why the other name by which Ischia is known in the world is "Green Island". The two-storey church has three "naves" with a "Latin cross" plan. In spite of the difficulties of the technical jargon, the Latin cross differs from the Greek one because the lateral spaces or "transepts" open roughly to two thirds of the central nave, drawing precisely a cross that recalls the shape of the Crucifix of the Christian tradition. In each of the aisles of the "Santa Maria di Portosalvo" church there is an altar. On each one a large painting, attributable, in all three cases, to Neapolitan painting of the nineteenth century. And in fact two of the paintings - Santa Maria di Portosalvo and San Giuda Taddeo, respectively in the main apse and on the left altar - are the work of Vincenzo De Angelis, while the San Francesco di Paola on the right altar is by Giambattista Santoro, painter from an illustrious family of artists from Cosenza, trained in the first half of the nineteenth century at the Academy of Naples. Since 1932 the "Santa Maria di Portosalvo" Church has been the parish seat: one of the 7 in the municipality of Ischia. One of the 25 on the entire island of Ischia.
