Chiesa di Santa Lucia

A real gem just a stone's throw from Piazza dei Signori, with marvelous frescoes and a strong sense of the sacred.

The church of Santa Lucia, together with that of San Vito are among the oldest religious buildings in Treviso. These two churches communicate with each other by an internal door when both are open, sometimes if one of the two churches is closed they have independent entrance doors on Piazza San Vito. In the place where the Church of Santa Lucia is now located, we know that previously there was the small church of Santa Maria delle Carceri, a prison chapel leaning against the apses of San Vito, and elevated in place of the city prison destroyed by a fire in 1354 . These two churches together with the nearby Monte di Pietà, are part of the same architectural block, which has changed over time, both for the functions performed with which they were created. The church takes its name in memory of perennial memory from the date of the settlement of the government of the Republic of Venice, on 13 December 1389 in the city of Treviso. The new church also retained the function of a prison chapel, with the altar dedicated to Santa Maria delle Carceri. At the beginning of 1399 in the church of Santa Lucia, the Confraternities of San Giacomo and Cristoforo and of Sant'Antonio Abate were granted the concession to build two new altars dedicated respectively to their patron saints. While the churches can be visited, special openings must be awaited for the Monte di Pietà building, such as the FAI days. A visit is recommended to appreciate the remarkable frescoes of the building. In the church of Santa Lucia you can admire the 14th century frescoes from the Scuola di Tommaso di Modena.

Small, magnificent church in the center, connected to the adjacent church of San Vito. Painted walls and ceilings, with a history spanning several hundreds of years, this jewel offers an atmosphere of religious intimacy that invites meditation. The work of volunteers who help keep the church open and usable is valuable.
