Mentre la prolungazione della cappella risale al 1930, quando è stata posta la statua di Cristo Re. Stupenda struttura da vedere. Maria Maddalena sorge sull'omonimo colle e ingloba: la chiesa medievale (con rifacimenti fino al XX secolo); la colossale Statua dorata del Cristo Re (nel punto più elevato del colle); il Sacrario dei Caduti delle guerre di tutta la Valle; le ultime due Stazioni della Via Crucis (la Crocifissione, ricavata all'interno del basamento del Cristo Re, e il Sepolcro, Cappella situata a sinistra della chiesa maddalenina e dove è collocato un gruppo di statue lignee scolpite nel 1612 da Paolo Amatore, secondo il pannello informativo, secondo altre fonti sarebbero opera di Beniamino Simoni di Saviore). Vi si può giungere in auto (c'è un ampio parcheggio) oppure a piedi, su un sentiero fiancheggiante le Stazioni della Via Crucis. La chiesa ha una facciata assai scenografica, realizzata in pietra, ornata da un rosone centrale e da sei colonne con capitelli corinzi provenienti dai ruderi del convento di S. Pietro in Barberino (sec. XIII), cioè l'Eremo dei SS. Pietro e Paolo di Bienno, che si trova poco sopra questo colle della Maddalena. La chiesa consta di due chiese o cappelle chiamate "inferiore" e "superiore" ma temporalmente coeve (XIII-XIV secolo). La prima in cui si accede è quella di S. Maddalena (superiore), l'altra è la Sala di S. Marta (inferiore, collocata in un locale semi-sotterraneo). Nella prima, ad unica aula, si trovano pitture con scene salienti della vita di Lazzaro e Maddalena, di fattura recente; sul soffitto tre grandi dipinti. Pregevoli affreschi datati 1573 decorano la parte absidale. Interessante anche il portalino ligneo con scene tratte dal Vecchio Testamento. Gli affreschi che decorano la volta a crociera della cappella inferiore sono attribuiti al famoso pittore bresciano Paolo da Caylina il Vecchio (1420-1486 ca), tuttavia secondo altri sarebbero di Giovanni Pietro da Cemmo (1445-?). Raffigurano Evangelisti, Dottori della Chiesa, angeli, un' Annunciazione. Probabilmente successive alla visita di S. Carlo Borromeo (1580) sono la sagrestia e la grotta del Sepolcro. P. S.
