Il progetto è stato attribuito all'architetto teatino Guarino Guarini sulla base degli elementi stilistici della chiesa, ma non vi sono prove documentali di questa paternità artistica. I lavori iniziarono nel 1675, subirono un'interruzione nel 1677 e furono terminati vent'anni dopo, quando la chiesa fu consacrata. The project was attributed to the Theatine architect Guarino Guarini on the basis of the stylistic elements of the church, but there is no documentary evidence of this artistic authorship. The work began in 1675, suffered an interruption in 1677 and was completed twenty years later, when the church was consecrated. The church was initially entrusted to the missionary Fathers, but in 1776 these were transferred to the convent of the Holy Martyrs. In the mid-nineteenth century the church became a simple oratory dedicated to particular functions of the archbishopric (here he was ordained a priest, June 5, 1841, Saint John Bosco). For a long time closed to the public and unused, the church suffered a considerable deterioration until, between 1981 and 1988, it underwent an integral conservative restoration.
