Sulmona is located in the heart of Abruzzo, close to the Majella National Park. I had the opportunity to frequent this lively town in the summer, and I appreciated the hospitality and resourcefulness of the Sulmonesi. However, it is a place of important historical and cultural importance since the times of the ancient Romans. In 43 BC Sulmo was the birthplace of the Latin poet Publio Ovidio Nasone. Sulmona is also known worldwide for its centuries-old tradition in the production of sugared almonds. The shops that sell sugared almonds to the public are very picturesque and inviting, note the shapes of the packaging and the patterns used for this completely handmade product.

Esso è attraversato da una via principale da capo a capo chiamata Corso Ovidio, costruita sopra il cardo romano originale, e nel centro sfocia nell'ampia Piazza Garibaldi, famosa per l'acquedotto di Manfredi di Svevia. Il centro è caratterizzato dallo stile gotico sulmonese, presente specialmente nelle chiese di San Francesco della Scarpa, di Santa Maria della Tomba e soprattutto presso la chiesa del Complesso della Santissima Annunziata, sulla facciata del palazzo vescovile. Oltre ai numerosi palazzi rinascimentali e settecenteschi, il centro sfocia nella villa comunale, dove si trova la Cattedrale di San Panfilo. I rioni storici sono in tutto 6, anticamente detti distretti e denominati sestieri nella Giostra cavalleresca moderna (Porta Salvatoris, Porta Sancti Pamphili, Porta Iapasseri, Porta Manaresca, Porta Romana, Porta Filiamabili) e 5 borghi (San Panfilo, Pacentrano, Santa Maria della Tomba, Borghetto e Magiaporci). Quattro sestieri e tre borghi, dopo il ripristino della "giostra cavalleresca" di Sulmona si sono riuniti in associazioni specifiche, partecipando ogni anno al palio e sfidandosi con dei premi. The historic center of Sulmona is one of the largest and best preserved in Abruzzo, and constitutes the main core of the medieval-Renaissance-Baroque city. It is crossed by a main street from head to head called Corso Ovidio, built over the original Roman cardo, and in the center it flows into the large Piazza Garibaldi, famous for the Manfredi di Svevia aqueduct. The center is characterized by the Sulmonese Gothic style, present especially in the churches of San Francesco della Scarpa, Santa Maria della Tomba and especially in the church of the Santissima Annunziata Complex, on the facade of the bishop's palace. In addition to the numerous Renaissance and eighteenth-century palaces, the center flows into the municipal villa, where the Cathedral of San Panfilo is located.
