Della struttura quattrocentesca rimane solo la parte superiore ricca di modanature e il frontone semicircolare sormontato da una testa barbuta sotto la quale si legge la parola "Vechio", da qui il nome della fontana. L'acqua che sgorga da questa fontana è potabile e sempre freschissima ed é ideale per dissetare gli abitanti locali ed i tanti visitatori della città. The Fontana del Vecchio in Sulmona was built in 1474 and is the final part of the ancient aqueduct. Of the fifteenth-century structure, only the upper part, rich in moldings and the semicircular pediment surmounted by a bearded head, under which the word "Vechio" can be read, hence the name of the fountain. The water that flows from this fountain is drinkable and always fresh and is ideal for quenching the thirst of the local inhabitants and the many visitors to the city.

La Fontana del Vecchio venne fatta costruire nel 1474 dal capitano Polidoro Tiberti da Cesena, ed è una delle più importanti testimonianze del periodo rinascimentale sulmonese. Nella lastra soprastante è riportata l’iscrizione: “POLYDORUS TYBERTUS CAESENAS PRAETOR SULMONIS CLARUS ET INSIGNIS SUB INVICTIS SIMO REGE FERDINANDO QUOI PRAETAER SICILIE REGNUM YTALIAM OMNEM PACE SE (davi) T OPUS HOC NOBILE STRUXIT ET VIAS URBIS STAERNENS MARMORE INCRUSTAVIT MCCCCLXXIIII”. Prende il nome dalla “testa barbuta che sovrasta la lunetta impostata sulla trabeazione su cui è incisa l’iscrizione con la data e il nome del committente. Della struttura originaria ha mantenuto la parte superiore, con la trabeazione ed il frontone semicircolare, mentre la vasca, che originariamente era formata da lisce lastre in pietra, nel 1901 è stata sostituita con una del tipo a sarcofago. Nella lunetta del frontone è scolpito lo stemma aragonese posto al centro di una ghirlanda di fiori e frutti sorretta da due angeli. Il fregio sottostante riporta alle estremità due stemmi di Sulmona con le sigle S. M. P. E. Completano la fontana due garguglie laterali a forma di fiore, mentre l’acroterio è formato da una testa barbuta (da dove sgorga l’acqua) tra due rosoni uniti da un nastro che reca la scritta Vechio Excellent drinking water from this beautiful fountain set in the medieval aqueduct. The fountain is completed by two lateral flower-shaped gargoyles, while the acroterion is made up of a bearded head (from where the water flows) between two rose windows joined by a ribbon bearing the inscription Vechio

Viene voglia di infilare le mani sotto il rivolo e rinfrescarsi. Un bellissimo manufatto storico che genera curiosità e attenzione nel turista. The terminal of the ancient aqueduct.
