Il castello è situato nel punto più alto del paese e ha subìto molte trasformazioni nel corso dei secoli, con la distruzione delle torri originarie e l'aggiunta dei bastioni sul lato nord-ovest. Dopo il terremoto del 1456 fu destinato a dimora gentilizia di cui, prima del restauro, restavano solo le imponenti strutture del piano terra e pochi ruderi dei piani superiori. The castle is located at the highest point of the town and has undergone many transformations over the centuries, with the destruction of the original towers and the addition of the ramparts on the north-west side. After the earthquake of 1456 it was used as a noble residence of which, before the restoration, only the imposing structures of the ground floor and a few ruins of the upper floors remained.

Dell'originario impianto del castello, costruito probabilmente sui resti di un precedente fortilizio romano, non rimane traccia a causa del terremoto del 1456. Le strutture oggi visibili risalgono alla ricostruzione effettuata dalla famiglia Pignatelli e poi da quella dei Carafa. Al castello si accede attraverso un artistico portale in pietra arenaria datato al 1505 e delimitato da due colonne ioniche antistanti in rilievo. All'esterno sono ancora visibili una torre di forma cilindrica, caratterizzata dalla presenza di una cisterna con pozzo situata al primo livello, e le cortine murarie che circondano tutta la corte del castello. Of the original layout of the castle, probably built on the remains of a previous Roman fort, no trace remains due to the earthquake of 1456. The structures visible today date back to the reconstruction carried out by the Pignatelli family and then by that of the Carafa family. The castle is accessed through an artistic sandstone portal dated to 1505 and bordered by two Ionic columns in front in relief. Outside there is still a cylindrical tower, characterized by the presence of a cistern with a well located on the first level, and the curtain walls that surround the entire courtyard of the castle.
