Nei primi anni del Quattrocento l'antica fortezza dei Da Camodeia fu acquistata dalla ricca e potente famiglia novarese dei Caccia da Mandello, che verso la fine di quel secolo la ristrutturarono profondamente, innalzandovi nell'angolo sud-ovest una rocca. The town of Castellazzo Novarese was built towards the end of the Middle Ages around an old semi-abandoned fortification, from which it took its name, which belonged to the powerful family of the Da Camodeia, famous above all between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. In the early years of the fifteenth century the ancient fortress of the Da Camodeia was bought by the rich and powerful Novara family of the Caccia da Mandello, who restructured it deeply towards the end of that century, raising a fortress in the south-west corner.

Sorge su di un più antico castello duecentesco, appartenuto alla famiglia dei Da Camodeia, che nella seconda metà del Quattrocento venne acquisito dai potenti Caccia da Mandello, i quali ampliarono e ristrutturarono radicalmente l'edificio originario. Oggi il complesso fortificato, di grandiose dimensioni, presenta una varietà di costruzioni che vanno dalla rocca vera e propria ad altri ambienti di più tarda erezione, sino ad arrivare all'epoca barocca. Il castello è di particolare interesse sotto il punto di vista dell'architettura militare: sono ancora visibili, infatti, le caditoie poste attorno al cammino di ronda, oltre ad alcune aperture circolari che un tempo potevano ospitare bombarde (le più grandi) e archibugi (le più piccole). Mette molta tristezza vedere un così grande patrimonio artistico in questo stato di degrado. It is one of the oldest and most important fortifications in the Novara area. It stands on an older thirteenth-century castle, which belonged to the Da Camodeia family, which in the second half of the fifteenth century was acquired by the powerful Caccia da Mandello, who radically enlarged and restructured the original building. Today the fortified complex, of great dimensions, has a variety of constructions ranging from the real fortress to other environments of later erection, up to the Baroque era. The castle is of particular interest from the point of view of military architecture: in fact, the machicolations placed around the patrol path are still visible, as well as some circular openings that once could house bombards (the largest) and arquebuses ( the smaller ones). It is very sad to see such a great artistic heritage in this state of decay.

Come molti altri ripropone il problema del riutilizzo degli edifici storici di grande dimensione e con alti costi di manutenzione. Quello di Castellazzo è stato adibito anche a dormitorio per le mondine ma non è bastato. Una parte del tetto è crollata e questo rende pessimisti sulla sua sopravvivenza. Forse è nel destino di Castellazzo, che deve non a caso il suo nome a un primo castrum abbandonato e andato in rovina. It is one of the most impressive lowland castles in the Novara area but also one of the worst preserved. Like many others, it re-proposes the problem of reusing large historic buildings with high maintenance costs. The one in Castellazzo was also used as a dormitory for the mondine but it was not enough. Part of the roof has collapsed and this makes it pessimistic about its survival. Perhaps it is in the destiny of Castellazzo, which owes its name not by chance to an abandoned and ruined first castrum.
