Eretta probabilmente da Francesco Sforza o dal casato dei Caccia con scopi non militari ( c'erano nelle vicinanze ben tre castelli più attrezzati) È attualmente di proprietà privata e sembra abbandonata, anche se non in cattive condizioni e si trova in prossimità della strada provinciale. Nel 1495 venne occupata dalle truppe di Federico il Moro, figlio di Francesco, ulteriore segno della sua appartenenza de facto al Ducato di Milano, nonostante fosse già stata concessa in feudo ai Tornielli, signori della vicina Briona. Il maniero nacque, con tutta probabilità, non a scopi difensivi bensì quale palazzo per lo svago degli Sforza, essendoci già nel raggio di pochi chilometri i castelli fortificati di Briona, Barengo e Castellazzo Novarese. È forse per questo che la sua architettura si presenta composita: se il cammino di ronda con le caditoie decorate da denti di sega è di disegno tipicamente sforzesco, le due torri circolari poste l'una a sud-ovest l'altra a nord-est richiamano le forme piemontesi/savoiarde. Ancora oggi appare come uno dei castelli più affascinanti del novarese. Peccato che negli ultimi anni lo si stia lasciando andare in decadenza: avrebbe bisogno di un buon restauro conservativo. Esternamente è molto suggestivo, mentre non è visitabile internamente, merita comunque un visita veloce. Con un piccolo contributo ben meritato ci hanno fatto rivivere le storie del castello del borgo e del bosco. La chiesa di San Silvestro purtroppo non è visitabile ma anche solo dall'esterno è unica e stupenda. Speriamo si possa riaprire in futuro. Wonderful visit strongly recommended. With young, well-prepared and well-organized local guides. With a well-deserved small contribution they made us relive the stories of the castle of the village and of the wood. Unfortunately, the church of San Silvestro cannot be visited but even from the outside it is unique and wonderful. We hope it can reopen in the future.
