The walking to the castle is in the tiny roads and provide good experience

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Incredibly beautiful location. We followed the walking directions on the website, taking the footpath from Varenna, which was steep but manageable and took about 30 minutes. It was mostly shady but probably best not attempted at the hottest part of the day! Don't follow Maps for walking directions as it currently takes people a longer 3km route up. Entry to the castle was 5 euro, it wasn't too busy and the views are amazing. There are birds of prey to see also - I would love to know a bit more about the birds and their welfare, but several were out of their enclosures and some had information boards. Apart from the birds, most informative was available in English as well as Italian. The tower stairs are quite steep/tall (sadly there is no alternative for those with limited mobility) but it's worth climbing if you can for the view! Some slightly strange but amusing decorations like skeletons in the old WW1 area and spooky ghost sculptures, as well as lots of lovely plants. So worth the price and the climb - some of the most amazing views I've ever seen.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ About a 45 minute Incline trail to the castle which is a great walk with breathtaking views of lake Como.
Definitely recommend and also to bring appropriate footwear as it is a rough trail.
It is quite a steep incline from Varenne port so just to bear that in mind!
Entry to the castle is around €5 per person (so is not free)

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Gorgeous views and history! The sculptures at the top added a lot to the experience. At 20 weeks pregnant, the hike up was very hard but doable with a lot of breaks. Pack water and make sure you eat beforehand.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Amazing place with great views. There are 2 ways to go up there, both on feet. Choose 1 to go up and then take the other one to go down. Both paths are beautiful. U need about 1 hour slow climbing to go up there, so be prepared. Worth 100%. One of the best castles i ve ever been in my life. Entrance ticket on October 2021 was 5 euros. Go for it!

Probably I shouldn't tell, but you can also visit the "secret place" of the castle.
