Nella seconda metà del XVI secolo, nell'ottica della riorganizzazione dei sistemi difensivi e d'avvistamento del litorale labronico, il granduca Cosimo I de' Medici ordinò la costruzione di una fortezza nel piccolo villaggio di Antignano, all'epoca non ancora inglobato nella città labronica.
Il progetto fu redatto da Raffaello Guerrazzi, comandante della Fortezza Vecchia di Livorno. I lavori furono avviati tra il 1560 ed il 1567. All'interno del cosiddetto castello si trovavano anche gli ambienti destinati alla guarnigione e ai lavoranti, nonché gli appartamenti per i granduchi. A servizio del fortilizio fu innalzata anche una cappella, l'odierna chiesa di Santa Lucia.

In the second half of the 16th century, in view of the reorganization of the defensive and sighting systems of the Labronic coast, the Grand Duke Cosimo I de 'Medici ordered the construction of a fortress in the small village of Antignano, at the time not yet incorporated into the city Livorno.
The project was drawn up by Raffaello Guerrazzi, commander of the Old Fortress of Livorno. The works were started between 1560 and 1567. Inside the so-called castle there were also rooms for garrison and workers, as well as apartments for the Grand Dukes. A chapel, today's church of Santa Lucia, was also built to serve the fort.
