Nel muro, che ha uno spessore di 2,50 metri, è ricavata una scala, formata da 99 gradini e larga 60 centimetri, che si svolge a spirale evitando le aperture delle monofore e delle bifore che danno luce all’interno. La struttura originaria dell’edificio, in cui convivono armonicamente elementi romanici e gotici, è stata modificata nel 1666, allorché la cella campanaria dovette essere adattata alle dimensioni di una gigantesca campana di 30 quintali. Con il passare del tempo, il soverchio peso e le oscillazioni dovute a una collocazione mal equilibrata della grossa campana provocarono delle gravi lesioni nell’edificio, per cui, nel dopoguerra, siprovvide a sostituirla con una di peso inferiore, ottenuta dalla sua fusione. Inserite nelle pareti del campanile si trovano dei frammenti di iscrizioni risalenti al X-XI secolo, che quasi certamente dovevano appartenere alla primitiva chiesa romanica di San Michele, che andò distrutta quando al di sopra di essa fu edificata la basilica angioina. The bell tower, built with squared limestone blocks, has a height of 25 meters, corresponding exactly to the length of its perimeter; it is formed by a base just over a meter high, on which four floors rest, each of which is emphasized by the presence of frames, pilasters and blind arches. In the wall, which has a thickness of 2.50 meters, there is a staircase, made up of 99 steps and 60 centimeters wide, which runs in a spiral avoiding the openings of the single and mullioned windows that give light inside. The original structure of the building, in which Romanesque and Gothic elements coexist harmoniously, was modified in 1666, when the belfry had to be adapted to the size of a gigantic bell weighing 30 quintals. With the passage of time, the excessive weight and oscillations due to a badly balanced location of the large bell caused serious injuries in the building, so after the war it was necessary to replace it with a lower weight, obtained from its casting. Inserted into the walls of the bell tower there are fragments of inscriptions dating back to the X-XI century, which almost certainly must have belonged to the primitive Romanesque church of San Michele, which was destroyed when the Angevin basilica was built above it.
