G	Gianluigi Di Vito on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Classico due piccioni con una fava, nello stesso luogo si posso ammirare la bellezza "voraginosa " della balze di Volterra e uno "spettrale" monastero benedettino del XI secolo. Visto da fuori il luogo sembra abbandonato al tempo, invece internamente sono ancora presenti alcuni affreschi e il bellissimo chiostro interno, merita la visita. Classic two pigeons with one stone, in the same place you can admire the "voraginosa" beauty of the volterra of Volterra and a "ghostly" Benedictine monastery of the 11th century. Seen from outside, the place seems abandoned at the time, instead inside there are still some frescoes and the beautiful internal cloister is worth a visit.

A	Alessio Guiggi on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Si tratta di un importante complesso monastico costruito nell’anno 1030 per iniziativa del Vescovo di Volterra Gunfredo da Novara. Inizialmente venne affidato ai monaci benedettini, chiamati a Volterra dalle stesso Gunfredo per custodire le spoglie mortali di San Giusto e San Clemente, patroni della città. Nel 1113 i monaci aderirono all’ordine dei camaldolesi e la Badia divenne una sede del loro noviziato, trasformandosi così un fiorente centro culturale e luogo di soggiorno e di studio per giovani. Tra il 1562 ed il 1572 l’intera struttura venne quasi totalmente ristrutturata su disegno di Bartolomeo Ammannati nel rispetto abbastanza fedele del sistema tipologico delle abbazie camaldolesi, assumendo le sembianze odierne. Nel 1808 il monastero venne sgombrato a causa della soppressione napoleonica degli Ordini religiosi, per poi essere ripristinato nel 1816 ma infine definitivamente sconsacrato ed abbandonato dai monaci nel 1866 a causa del pericoloso avvicinamento delle Balze. Molto bello e suggestivo il chiostro, al cui centro è posto il parapetto di una grandiosa cisterna di raccolta delle acque piovane decorato da una elegante ringhiera in ferro. Interessanti anche i resti di una grossa meridiana disegnata sul pavimento dall’Abate Silvano Zeri da Lucca. Notevoli, invece, gli affreschi del refettorio eseguiti tra il 1595 ed il 1598 da Donato Mascagni. It is an important monastic complex built in 1030 on the initiative of the Bishop of Volterra Gunfredo da Novara. Initially it was entrusted to the Benedictine monks, called to Volterra by Gunfredo himself to guard the mortal remains of San Giusto and San Clemente, patrons of the city. In 1113 the monks joined the order of the Camaldolese and the Abbey became a seat of their novitiate, thus transforming itself into a thriving cultural center and a place to stay and study for young people. Between 1562 and 1572 the entire structure was almost totally renovated to a design by Bartolomeo Ammannati in fairly faithful respect of the typological system of the Camaldolese abbeys, assuming today's appearance. In 1808 the monastery was cleared due to the Napoleonic suppression of the religious orders, only to be restored in 1816 but finally definitively deconsecrated and abandoned by the monks in 1866 due to the dangerous approach of the Balze. The cloister is very beautiful and evocative, at the center of which is the parapet of a grandiose rainwater collection cistern decorated with an elegant iron railing. Also interesting are the remains of a large sundial drawn on the floor by Abbot Silvano Zeri from Lucca. On the other hand, the frescoes in the refectory painted between 1595 and 1598 by Donato Mascagni are noteworthy.

Lasci la macchina davanti al cancello e non sai se puoi entrare, poi noti un signore, chiedi permesso... Io adoro le avventure così! è meglio di qualsiasi museo, qualsiasi gita organizzata, questi incontri, scoperte, sorprese... Questo monastero Camaldolese ha (spero che ha ancora! perché sono stata l'ultima volta ... mamma mia, non c credo! nel 2017, 31 dicembre 2017, ultimo tramonto dell'anno...) il suo custode. l'angelo custode. Non vi racconto qui la storia dei monaci, come raccoglievano l'acqua, come funziona la meridiana, vi racconterà tutto lui, il custode. Ci ha portati anche a vedere le sculture del suo fratello nell'oliveta e poi mi ha regalato il cavolo nero dell'orto....Le meraviglie degli incontri casuali in Toscana...
