The so-called Torrione was one of the most grandiose mausoleums in Rome in the shape of a tumulus contained in a mighty circular drum (about 41 meters in diameter) which had to be covered externally with travertine blocks of which no trace remains today. Its original appearance was distorted by the complete elimination of the mound of earth after the Second World War and by the subsequent demolition of part of the drum on the occasion of the enlargement of Via Prenestina; moreover, after 1980 the huts that had been built close to the monument were eliminated. The entrance was located on the opposite side of Via Prenestina and through a corridor inside the mound you entered the burial chamber with three rectangular niches, the two rooms were in square work with tuff blocks and covered with a barrel vault. The bombings of the war caused the collapse of a part of the corridor and the landslide of numerous blocks of the cell. The tomb is dated to the Augustan age, but the name of its recipient is not known, in fact there is no evidence in favor of the attributions hypothesized by some scholars. It was first included in a vineyard, then in the course of the 1400s owned by Rufini it was used as a cellar, next to it a two-storey tower was erected. At the end of the 16th century it was ceded to the Irish Dominican Fathers who leaning against it a farmhouse and a well, which still exists and was rebuilt in 1800.

A very beautiful tiny park. An ancient tomb, unfortunately not open to people, is part of it.
