Nella sua opera “Viaggio a Tivoli antichissima città latino-sabina fatto nel 1825”, Filippo Alessandro Sebastiani riferisce che : “il proprietario di questo Tempio, Stefano Senese, mi ha detto che il volgo lo chiama il tempio della tosse, perché la Madonna antichissima, che è dipinta nell’abside a libeccio, ha la bocca aperta. Difatti ha una deforme apertura di bocca, come leggiamo delle pitture di Buonamico di Cristofano, conosciuto sotto il nome di Buffalmacco, e di Bruno di Giovanni suo compagno nel secolo XIV. Sarebbe mai possibile che da questa leggerissima circostanza, le femminelle di Tivoli estremamente materiali, e estremamente religiose nel tempo istesso, avessero ricavato una tale etimologia? Io che uso attualmente cò Tivolesi, lo trovo ben probabile, anzi lo darei per certo. Precisato ciò almeno vale la pena - se non scrutarlo dalla strada - almeno cercarlo dall'alto...da villa d'Este o, ancora meglio, dal santuario di Ercole vincitore che gli è particolarmente vicino in linea d'area....ma non pensate di raggiungerlo a piedi, è distante e su un terreno privato. Probabilmente un tempio romano poi convertito in chiesa deve il nome a una effigie della Madonna con la bocca aperta, si diceva per la tosse. Un peccato sia stato lasciato andare...ricorda un po' la cappella del cardinale Reginald pole, tra caffarella e Appia antica. Guardate le foto e le altre recensioni su Tivoli e su Roma e le sue meraviglie che ho fatto e se sono stato utile cliccate su utile. Let's start by saying that it cannot be visited. p	phong le on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Lots of wrong photos and reviews about this round structure (temple?). Can't enter as the gate was locked. It looked unmaintained and left to wither away unfortunately. Worth a stop and quick look from the outside if you are driving past but don't bother walking downhill from town like we did just to see it.
