★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Il Santuario di San Francesco da Paola a Paterno Calabro, è stato uno dei pochi eretti da San Francesco in persona (1472), unico caso insieme a quello di Paola prima del riconoscimento dell’Ordine dei Minimi.
In esso l’Eremita paolano passò lungo tempo, perchè la solitudine ed il raccoglimento del luogo favorivano la sua esperienza contemplativa. Ancora oggi, nonostante le mutate condizioni storiche ed ambientali, il Convento di Paterno conserva il fascino di un tempo, solitudine e raccoglimento sono componenti connaturali al Convento di S. Francesco, che conserva tutti i tratti dell’eremitismo dell’origine dell’Ordine dei Minimi.
L’interno del Santuario in stile barocco è a due navate, al termine della navata laterale si trova la Cappella di San Francesco, in cui sono custodite le reliquie del santo. Sempre dalla chiesa si ha accesso al chiostro, realizzato in pianta quadrata e costituito da sei archi a sesto acuto per lato, poggianti su altrettante colonne a base quadrangolare; al centro anticamente si trovava un pozzo ora sostituito da una vasca.
The Sanctuary of San Francesco da Paola in Paterno Calabro was one of the few erected by San Francesco himself (1472), the only case together with that of Paola before the recognition of the Order of Minims.
The Pauline Hermit spent a long time in it, because the solitude and the concentration of the place favored his contemplative experience. Even today, despite the changed historical and environmental conditions, the Convent of Paterno retains the charm of the past, solitude and meditation are connatural components to the Convent of S. Francesco, which preserves all the features of the hermitism of the origin of the Order of Minimum.
The interior of the Baroque-style sanctuary has two naves, at the end of the side aisle there is the Chapel of San Francesco, where the relics of the saint are kept. Also from the church you have access to the cloister, built on a square plan and consisting of six pointed arches on each side, resting on as many quadrangular-based columns; in the center in ancient times there was a well now replaced by a tub.
