Il corpo principale della Chiesa risale alla fine del Cinquecento quando Ludovico Pappalardo, nonno di Don Diego, in un terreno di sua proprietà diede inizio ai lavori di costruzione perché quella del 1388 era ormai diventata piccola e cadente. L'edificio fu seriamente danneggiato, come tutti gli altri del paese, dal terremoto del 1693 ed i lavori di riparazione e consolidamento furono ultimati due anni più tardi da Don Diego. Tra la fine dell'Ottocento ed i primi del Novecento la chiesa fu ampliata con l'aggiunta delle due navate laterali e nel 1971 l'arcivescovo di Catania, mons. Guido Bentivoglio, la elevò alla dignità di Santuario Mariano Diocesano. È il centro della devozione popolare locale perché custodisce il simulacro dell'Annunziata ed i resti mortali della Serva di Dio Giuseppina Faro, giovane pedarese morta nel 1871 per la quale oggi è in corso la causa di beatificazione. The building was seriously damaged, like all the others in the country, by the earthquake of 1693 and the repair and consolidation works were completed two years later by Don Diego. Between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the church was enlarged with the addition of two lateral naves and in 1971 the archbishop of Catania, Msgr. Guido Bentivoglio raised it to the dignity of a Diocesan Marian Shrine. It is the center of local popular devotion because it preserves the simulacrum of the Annunziata and the mortal remains of the Servant of God Giuseppina Faro, a young Pedarese who died in 1871 for which the cause of beatification is currently underway.
