San Donato fu il secondo vescovo di Arezzo e fu martirizzato nell'anno 363 d. C. Di lui si raccontano vari miracoli il più famoso dei quali riguarda un calice di vetro. Mentre stava celebrando messa alcuni pagani mandarono in frantumi il calice di vetro. Donato raccolse i cocci e li rimise insieme, ma ne mancava uno. Nonostante ciò, vi versò il vino senza che questo cadesse dal fondo. Rimasti increduli da quanto avevano visto i pagani si convertirono al Cristianesimo. San Donato was the second bishop of Arezzo and was martyred in the year 363 d. C. Several miracles are told of him, the most famous of which concerns a glass goblet. While he was celebrating Mass some pagans shattered the glass goblet. Donato picked up the pieces and put them back together, but one was missing. Despite this, he poured wine into it without it falling from the bottom. They remained incredulous from what the pagans had seen converted to Christianity.

Il primo documento in cui viene nominato è del 778 d.c.[7]; l'anno in cui il Duca di Spoleto, Ildebrando, concedeva la chiesa ed il territorio di San Donato al Monastero di San Vincenzo al Volturno. Dell'originale "aecclesia" non ci sono tracce, in quanto numerose modificazioni e ristrutturazioni hanno portato il santuario all'aspetto attuale. La lunghezza dell'edificio è di 26 metri, la larghezza è di 12 metri e infine la cupola è di 18 metri di altezza, è costituito da 3 navate, di cui la centrale contiene affreschi che rappresentano i momenti più significativi della vita del santo. Su alcune note, presenti sui registri parrocchiali, si deduce che le ricche decorazioni del "Tempio" furono realizzate dagli architetti Mastroianni di Roma, Cristoforo Bozzolini e Clemente Forzaretti di Milano nel 1780 circa. Nel 1859 vennero iniziati i lavori di costruzione del campanile adiacente, alto 17 metri, i quali vennero ultimati nel 1921. Nel 1915 fu eseguito il restauro dall'artista Fiorini di Sora, su indicazione del canonico Luigi Ippoliti. Recentemente è stato effettuato un restauro degli affreschi e delle decorazioni interne e della facciata frontale. La venerazione del santo è la dimostrazione di un antico legame che univa il "Castrum Sancti Donati" con le terre di Toscana ed Umbria e che va avanti, dopo l'anno mille con donazioni feudali tra Arezzo e Capua. Salendo su per le stradine strette tra le antiche case, con fiori colorati alle finestre, e arrampicandosi per scalinate strette e sdrucciolevoli, si arriva al Santuario dedicato al Santo patrono del paese. Il santuario, risalente probabilmente al 778 d.c. è stato ben ristrutturato dopo il terribile terremoto che colpí la Valle di Comino nel 1984. . Dal sagrato si può godere di uno splendido panorama. Climbing up the narrow streets between the old houses, with colorful flowers on the windows, and climbing up narrow and slippery stairways, you arrive at the Sanctuary dedicated to the patron saint of the town. The sanctuary, probably dating back to 778 AD it was well restored after the terrible earthquake that struck the Comino Valley in 1984. . From the churchyard you can enjoy a splendid view.
