Saint Mary in Publicolis - the origin of the name of the church is still uncertain. The most credible hypothesis is that in the Roman period in the area were the Munucia Frumentaria Portico - where the free quotas of cereals were distributed - frumentum publicum. The church was rebuilt by the Santacroce family who commissioned the project of the architect Giovanni Antonio de Rossi who co-completed it in 1653. Inside, important works made by Alessandro Grimaldi, Raffaello Vanni, the tombs of the Santacroce family made by the sculptor Lorenzo Ottoni.

El altar dedicado a la Virgen y las pinturas del techo así como los mármoles rojos de las paredes dan una sensación de riqueza. Junto a la puerta una pareja de benefactores enterrados se asoman como en un balcón todo en mármoles hacen una escena bastante curiosa. Merece la pena un vistazo al pasar por esta zona obligada y llena de encanto. Beautiful church also almost unknown. It is also surprising its well-preserved baroque decoration. The altar dedicated to the Virgin and the paintings of the ceiling as well as the red marbles of the walls give a feeling of wealth. Next to the door, a pair of buried benefactors peer out like a balcony, all in marbles make a rather curious scene. It is worth a look to go through this area and full of charm.
A	Alessio Fauni on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Inserita in modo incredibile nel contesto dei palazzi che costituiscono questo isolato nel centro storico di Roma, troviamo questa chiesa risalente originariamente alla seconda metà dell'Dodicesimo Secolo. Favoloso l'affresco sulla porta di ingresso. Internamente è veramente pulita e ordinata, con un acustica ottima e un gioco di luci che valorizza benissimo molte delle opere presenti. Sicuramente una visita gradevole. Incredibly inserted in the context of the buildings that make up this block in the historic center of Rome, we find this church dating back to the second half of the Twelfth Century. The fresco on the entrance door is fabulous. Internally it is really clean and tidy, with excellent acoustics and a play of lights that enhances many of the works present. Definitely a pleasant visit.

Evidenze storiche indicano che il nome deriva dalla vicinanza con la "Porticus Minucia Frumentaria", in edificio dove avveniva la distribuzione gratuita del grano per le persone che ne avevano il diritto. La chiesa ebbe diversi restauri, la forma attuale deriva da quello avvenuto nel 1643, grazie al Cardinale della Famiglia Santacroce. La facciata è su tre ordini: il primo ha un imponente partale sovrastato da un frontone curvilineo spezzato al cui interno è presente un pregevole affresco che rappresenta la Vergine Maria, con una veste rossa e uno sgargiante manto celeste, circondata da angeli (l'affresco appare abbastanza rimaneggiato). Ai lati del portale sono presenti due colonne con particolari capitelli. Sull’architrave si trova l’iscrizione latina "DEIPARAE VIRGINI IN PUBLICOLIS MDCXLIII" che in italiano significa " Alla Madre di Dio Vergine in Publicolis 1643". Sul secondo ordine si trova una grande finestra con frontone triangolare spezzato con nel timpano una grande conchiglia. Nel terzo ordine una vetrata nel timpano curvilineo spezzato, sormontato da una croce di ferro. La chiesa è ad un’unica navata e fu utilizzata come cappella gentilizia dalla nobile famiglia Santacroce (con discendenti sin dall’antica Roma), infatti vi sono diversi monumenti e lastre tombali che li riguardano. The small Church of S. Maria in publicolis (about the twelfth century), is located in Via dei Falegnami. Historical evidences indicate that the name derives from the proximity to the "Porticus Minucia Frumentaria", in a building where the free distribution of the grain took place for the people who had the right. The church had several restorations, the current form derives from that which took place in 1643, thanks to the Cardinal of the Santacroce Family. The façade is on three orders: the first has an imposing partition surmounted by a broken curvilinear pediment inside which there is a valuable fresco representing the Virgin Mary, with a red robe and a flamboyant celestial mantle, surrounded by angels (the fresco appears quite reworked). On the sides of the portal there are two columns with particular capitals. On the architrave is the Latin inscription "DEIPARAE VIRGINI IN PUBLICOLIS MDCXLIII" which in Italian means "To the Mother of the Virgin God in Publicolis 1643". On the second order there is a large window with a triangular pediment broken with a large shell in the tympanum. In the third order a window in the broken curvilinear tympanum, surmounted by an iron cross. The church has a single nave and was used as a noble chapel by the noble Santacroce family (with descendants since ancient Rome), in fact there are several monuments and tombstones that concern them.
