This is the church which hold the relics of st. Augustine. The hermit Augustinians and the Augustinian canons lived together in this location. But today the hermits (Augustinian friars) live here and Run this august pilgrimage site. Though an old church which was devastated by more than one earthquakes, it still retains its frescos and identity. The tomb of Augustine at the main alter is a sight to behold and a place to pray. Happy visit.

Nice facade (Lombard). Located in a quiet neighborhood next to a pleasant little park/piazza. Inside there is a beautiful 14th century funeral monument to St Augustine. Yes, the "Doctor of the Church" and "City of God" St Augustine. Legend has it that his bones are located under the monument (the usual skepticism is warranted with these sorts of claims). Still, the faithful make pilgrimage to this Church so it was, given it's location, rather crowded. In and out in 25 minutes. Free.

At first glance, you may think that this is just one ordinary church. The name of the church, San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro (St. Peter in Golden Sky), refers to the mosaics of gold leaf behind the glass tesserae, decorating the ceiling of the apse. However, the mosaics seem not very well maintained and give the impression that the splendour of this church had faded throughout the centuries. Nonetheless, the richness of this church is not in the appearance but the treasures within. You can find the tombs of St. Augustine of Hippo and a lesser known philosopher, Boethius, here. There should not be many tourists around as well, which will give you the quiet space and time to yourself.

Resting place of my Patron Saint, St Augustine. You will find Augustinian Monks here. There is a little plaque that tells you the original spot where his remains were found, this can be found on the right hand side as you enter the church. Definitely look to visit this church to pray at the resting place of a Doctor of the Catholic Church.
