★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The ancient church, of Romanesque architecture , is located along the path that leads from the parish church of San Roccotowards the coast to the geographical area called Punta Chiappa. The building of the temple dates back to the 12th century by the regular canons of San Rufo , on the site where - according to local tradition - there was already a chapel named after Saint Romulus .
According to some studies carried out in the ancient place of worship, it seems that a small inhabited nucleus was formed here - almost independent from the village of Camogliese - annexed to the adjacent monastery.
Due to the violent raids of the Saracen piratesthe entire complex was abandoned during the fifteenth century, thus becoming the seat of the most diverse civil and religious uses.
In 1870 the church was reopened for religious worship and placed with delicate restorations between 1925 and 1926, such as the façade in stone and decorated with visible arches. The interior of the temple - with a single nave and a T-shaped plan - is made entirely of black stone or slate, still presenting the remains of ancient frescoes from the Middle Ages .

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Placed in a very beautiful location, the hike down is enjoyable if you can handle the steep decent and climb back out. The inside is a little underwhelming but you have to admire the work that went into building it all.
