Saint Marta

Beautiful little-known church, in an alleyway between the monastery of Santa Chiara and the church of the Gesù. It opens only on special occasions. Dedicated to the patron saint of housewives and hotel workers.

[1] In the seventeenth century the Brotherhood of the Disciplined declined and spent five master chosen by the people who established a dowry for poor girls. A first restoration took place in 1646; after a year it was partially destroyed by a fire during the riots of Masaniello and then subject to new restorations, which were carried out in 1650 [1] at the will of the then bishop Ascanio Filomarino and which saw the filling of the church with works of art, the construction of the dome and the raising of the ceiling, placed the latter in a higher position than the previous one. On this occasion the church was also entrusted to the Confraternity of Santa Marta; still further restorations occurred later in 1715. [1] After the dissolution of the brotherhood, in 1817, at the behest of Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies, the church passed into the hands of the Archconfratenita of the Nativity of the Virgin and in the mid-nineteenth century further restorations were carried out which canceled the baroque decorations. In 1943 the burning of the Angevin registers preserved in the monastery of Santa Chiarac led to the disappearance of all the documents containing the historical evidence of the church, whose reconstruction therefore takes place only partially.
