★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Owners are friendly and have a can do attitude, Only restaurant open on the beach in the winter, we often sit outside and eat to enjoy the warm winter sun, they thoughtfully provide free sun beds to enjoy after, nice touch.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Well in April the beach was not crowded (but not empty). Tried the restaurant, which was much better than expected. Somehow I got stuck into the local pastas, so I tried again fileja alla tropeana. It was great (like the other dishes).

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Oh my - I had the best pasta sauce with muscles, clams and prawns with GF pasta yesterday. We came with family and friends and that was the best pasta I’ve had in Italy. The GF pizzas were fabulous too and our friends / family also raved about their gnocchi, pasta and pizzas. Great service, we’ll priced and I’d be back there in a blink.
My daughter was soooooo happy with the GF pizza ??

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Finally! After 3 nights in Tropea, Mare Grande gave me what I was looking for - a trattoria with simple yet delicious local cooking, at reasonable prices.
Yes, the plastic chairs are humble and it’s not as glitzy or glamorous as some other establishments in Tropea, but it is almost right on the beach and the service is as good as the food - warm, hearty and utterly endearing.
My step father is Calabrese and he described the pizza he ate here as the best he’s had this trip (high praise indeed!) For me, I was so enamoured by the quality of the food that I chose to consume everything (despite being uncomfortably full), rather than let a single delicious morsel go to waste.
Oh, and for the coeliacs and gluten free folk out there - they have gluten free pizza and pasta .... and it’s GREAT!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Awesome pizza (gluten free option available). Wouldn't have expected such a great experience so near to the beach. Really warm hearted and nice waiting staff (or was it the owner?). Great view of the Tropea cathedral.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Ambient was not so.nice but hospitality was. There was also a group of older guys playing cards. We were a bit early so pizza was not an option but pasta was great anyway. Must try pasta with ndjulo which is a tipical/local dish.

We arrived on a Saturday at 1:15 and both the inside and outside were open. Pizza was being served (which isn’t always happening at lunch in Italy) . High chair was available
We ordered pizza margarita, pizza calabrese (HIGHLY recommend if you like spicy- topped with a local spicy sausage similar to chorizo), spaghetti e vongole (oil and herb sauce over spaghetti with clams), 2 glasses of the house red wine, and a large bottle of water. The food was delicious. The waitstaff was kind and helpful. The cost was under 40€ which was WELL WORTH it.
