Construction began in 1297 to serve as the seat of the Republic of Siena's government, which consisted of the Podestà and Council of Nine, the elected officials who performed executive functions.
B	B N on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The views from the top of the tower are fantastic but be warned that the stairs are extremely tight and it's a very long climb which might not suit some. You can still go slowly however, and if your squeeze into corners it's not too bad to let people pass in either direction. The museum is a little underwhelming but you can also go upstairs to the second floor terrace which is a relatively quiet space with a decent view. It is a bit expensive for what you get, compared to the Duomo.
B	Bob Frommer on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Climbing the tall bell towers of Europe is always exciting and challenging, and the Siena Torre del Mangia is no exception. The narrow passages must accommodate traffic going up and going down making for some tight squeezes--we wonder how soldiers with weapons were able to maneuver when they were forced to climb the tower to defend the town against invaders. When you emerge at the top of the tower you can walk completely around it to enjoy the spectacular view in all directions. Hint: We arrived at 9:55 and had no waiting in line.

You have to get up a tall winding tower to get there and sometimes this is closed but luckily open when we visited. Well maintained for a building from 1297. 9 Euros to enter but totally worth it.

F	Florence GOUNI-T de G on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Probably one of the most iconic building of Siena, featured in James Bond’s Quantum of Solace with the rooftop chase while the horse race is happening on Il Campo, the big square in front of the building. The symmetry of the architecture is quite astounding, particularly the inner courtyard right after entering the Palazzo.

The entry courtyard is free and offers a unique look at the tower from directly below. The ticket booth is at the back of this courtyard if you wish to enter.
