★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Le porte di Lucca rappresentavano in passato il sistema difensivo della città. Fungevano anche da frontiera doganale delle merci.
All'epoca dei romani nel II secolo a.C. le porte della città erano quattro una per ogni punto cardinale. Nel medioevo rimasero 4 invece nel periodo rinascimentali le porte furono ridotte a tre: Porta S Pietro, Porta S. Maria e Porta S. Donato. rinunciando a quella verso est. Queste porte sono ancora oggi ben conservate ma anche se non sono uguali ad un tempo.
Vi erano ponti levatoi fossi e spalti, vi erano anche le case dei soldati.
Nel 1810 fu costruita un varco Porta Elisa e altre porte, S. Anna 1911 e S Jacopo 1931.
Nel centro storico di Lucca sono ancora esistenti alcune porte monumentali, dopo l’ampliamento della cinta muraria: si tratta della Porta dei borghi e di quella Porta S Gervasio e Porta S DonatoVecchia.
