La porta prende il nome dal convento delle chiariste di San Luca, adiacente ad essa che attualmente è la sede del comando dei Carabinieri di Potenza. Ai lati dell’arco a tutto sesto sono visibili i conci di pietra calcarea a cui erano fissati i cardini che consentivano l’apertura della porta. Sicuramente è una delle cose da vedere quando si visita il capoluogo lucano. One of the six access gates to the old part of the city. Ai lati dell’arco a tutto sesto sono visibili i conci di pietra calcarea a cui erano fissati i cardini che consentivano l’apertura della porta.Il monastero di San Luca era, come l’antecedente dedicato a San Lazzaro, di origine femminile e di regola benedettina. L’esiguità delle fonti sul monastero di San Lazzaro deriva dalla sua repentina e cruenta scomparsa intorno alla metà del ‘400, in seguito all’epidemia di peste che dilagò in molte regioni meridionali. Il monastero, successivamente, fu probabilmente aggregato a quello di San Luca con tutti i suoi beni. Edificio più volte ampliato, restaurato e rimaneggiato nei secoli; oltre al convento ed alla chiesa, comprendeva nella parte bassa a sud del fabbricato, un giardino con un muro di cinta che si dilungava fino all’attuale via Garibaldi. Il monastero fu soppresso con il decreto del 17 febbraio 1861, col quale si sopprimevano nelle Provincie napoletane e siciliane gli ordini monastici di ambo i sessi. Attualmente è sede del Comando Provinciale dei Carabinieri. Intorno al 1925 l’antico monastero fu abbellito dalla costruzione di portici. La caserma dei carabinieri fu inizialmente dedicata a Mario Pagano e successivamente al tenente dei carabinieri il potentino Orazio Petruccelli, morto a Cefalonia nel 1943. The monastery was suppressed with the decree of 17 February 1861, with which monastic orders of both sexes were suppressed in the Neapolitan and Sicilian Provinces. It currently houses the Provincial Command of the Carabinieri. Around 1925 the ancient monastery was embellished with the construction of arcades. The carabinieri barracks was initially dedicated to Mario Pagano and later to the lieutenant of the carabinieri the potentino Orazio Petruccelli, who died in Kefalonia in 1943.
