Near the remains of the church of S. Maria delle Fortezze, built in the early sixteenth century, destroyed with the bombing of the Second World War and no longer rebuilt, is the Porta di San Leonardo, one of the oldest gates of Viterbo, mentioned for the first time in a document of 1278.
Under this gate passed the route of the ancient Etruscan-Roman road that connected the cities of Viterbo and Rome. During the fifteenth century, however, due to changed urban planning and road requirements, this route was modified. Thus Porta San Leonardo, losing its importance, was closed.
Its reopening took place in 1993 as a pedestrian crossing, to help many students arriving from the Porta Romana train station and regional bus stops to prevent them from crossing the Cassia intersection.
On the inner side of the walls, in the lunette of the arch, you can see a medieval fresco depicting a "Christ Crucified and Saints", whose presence on the site is attested in a notarial Viterbo script of 1565.

ENGLISH: Located just behind the remains of the church of Santa Maria delle Fortezze, this gate is a pedestrian passage that was reopened in 1993, after more than 300 years of closure. All the ports of Viterbo are suggestive, in particular this one which remains a little hidden and above all away from traffic. Sorry that there is only one point of illumination, however not very intense, so in the evening it seems an area a little abandoned to itself and not valued as it should be.
