The image that emerges and united between the urban and the past is a brutality as they come together in a unique symbiosis. A pity that it is in works I hope it is to improve it or to be able to maintain it. It's amazing that every step you take you find these images.

Porta Metronia is one of the many gates in the walls of Rome from the third century. The gate is located in the south of the wall between Porta San Giovanni in the east and Porta Latina in the south. At the end of the Middle Ages, the gate was closed and the passage was bricked up. Due to the increasing traffic in modern times, four additional passages were created next to the main gate. The ground level around the gate has risen considerably over the centuries, which is why the original passage is partly underground.

Porta Metronia offers an overview of the Aurelian Walls; unfortunately the traffic and the construction site of the Metro obscure its charm.

Although less prestigious than its colleagues (Porta Asinaria and Porta Pinciana) this door retains its charm and its historical importance. Over time it was given various names, but they all seem (including the current one) deformations from an original Metrovia (perhaps derived from some Metrobius or Metronianus that seems to have had possessions in the area during the late empire). A somewhat fanciful hypothesis, born by the philologists of the fourteenth century, defines it Porta Metaura, making it derive the name from meta aurum, that is the place where the gold of the taxes paid by the provinces to Rome was deposited and weighed. , before it was transferred to the state coffers. But no element supports this hypothesis. The only name that differs from these roots is "Porta Gabiusa", due to the fact that it was possible to reach the city of Gabii by the way that started from there (the current Via Gallia). Porta Metronia is part of one of the strengths of the capital is undoubtedly the Park of the Aurelian Walls. Magical, historical, of inestimable archaeological and architectural importance. Beautiful by day and charming and bewitching in the evening. You literally go through the history of Rome with a simple walk. You can see Porta Metronia, Porta San Sebastiano and Porta Latina. with the adjacent museum of the Walls ... beautiful! I highly recommend a visit!

Another fascinating Porta of the Aurelian wall. It looks great in the night. The traffic is murderous. You can start here a nice walk along the Aurelian wall, first going south. It is perfect for jogging like a small parc, but also your dog and the other dogs love it here especially the fresh water of the aquaeduct...

(I don't evaluate the historical relevancy of the monument, which is invaluable, I evaluate the supporting facilities that elevate the monument) There are no signs explaining the doors in the vicinity, hard to walk around as it has passing traffic all the time. Had some maintenance some years ago hence it looks good at the time of writing.

The Aurelian Wall built by emperor Aurelian to keep the barbarian out in the 270’s AD. Added to and altered over time and the many threats Rome faced.
